 Iga Ueno area maintains the quiet appearance of the castle
town with hundreds-of-years history. It is the homeland of Iga
Ninjas and the birthplace of Basho
Matsuo (a famous Haiku poet in 17th century). However,
because surrounded by mountains, it has big temperature differences
between winter and summer, and lands are not so fertile. In these
severe natural surroundings, people of Iga who inherited span
will power and perseverance of Ninjas and acute sensitivity of
Basho created an artistic local industry "Kumihimo (Braiding)".In the Hirai Kumihimo Musium, by the historical crossing sign of Kagiya-no-Tsuji, we exhibit traditional and new braiding techniques, braiding works, and tools (such as stands). There are no other places as here to understand the Iga-braiding. We look forward to your visit! |
 We
are famous with the beautiful and delicate hand-made braiding
braided by gold and silver threads on traditional stands, and
occupy the majority of national production. While we produce traditional
kimono accessories as sash bands and haori laces, we also create
new products such as neckties, necklaces, key chains and other
accessories. We, Hirai Kenzo Store, continue to develop new products
with help from designers and advisors to utilize braiding of Iga

 We
develop braiding
classes across the country to teach the technique
of "the Iga Hakuo School of Japanese Braiding" which
makes the most of one's sense and originality. We have seen a
spread of Japanese braiding not only among adults but also among children through participation to these classes.We also hold "The National Exhibition of the Iga Hakuo School of Japanese Braiding" every year to exhibit wonderful works from whom learned in these classes. ' The Braiding of Iga" which is born and bread from the severe natural surroundings of Iga , is not only a mere local industry but becoming the traditional culture of Japan now . |
